STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — A wild night of binge drinking led to the death of a New Jersey college student and serious criminal charges against more than a dozen fraternity brothers.

More than a thousand criminal charges, including manslaughter, were filed against 18 people and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity in connection with the February death of Timothy Piazza at a Penn State fraternity house.

The events that led to the death of Piazza were captured on video.

The fraternity, which was supposed to have been "dry" as punishment for past excessive drinking and hazing. The February incident led to the fraternity being banned from the school and a severe crackdown on other fraternities, including the suspension of one.

With Piazza's parents standing by her side, Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller announced the findings of a grand jury investigation.

The fraternity itself is charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, 50 counts of hazing, 48 counts of furnishing alcohol to minors and 48 counts of unlawful acts related to liquor. Eight people are facing manslaughter charges.

The charges against Beta Theta Pi and the frat brothers range from involuntary manslaughter to furnishing alcohol to minors and evidence tampering.

"The video tape evidence is the story of this crime. It's unbelievable to have a crime captured from beginning to end," Miller said, in releasing new details about the night Piazza died.

Miller said that the night Piazza died, the Hunterdon Central Regional graduate and other pledges were part of a initiation called a "gauntlet," which involved drinking "enormous" amounts of alcohol.

"His blood alcohol, after it was over in a matter of minutes, reached almost .40. Essentially it was a fatal amount of alcohol and it led to him falling down a set of stairs," Miller said. The fall left him with visible injuries stomach and the head.

Piazza was moved to a couch where members of the fraternity "hovered" over him as his conditioned got worse, according to surveillance video in the fraternity house.  Several times he tried to get up but wound up falling down. Eventually, he fell down the stairs a second time hours later in the morning.

Miller said that after the second fall, Piazza was moved to a couch. Despite being in "monumental need of help," people waited 40 minutes to call for an ambulance. Miller said some of the frat members testified that Piazza looked "dead" and used their phones to search Google for treating head injuries.

When they finally did call for help, Miller said the fraternity members did not mention he had fallen and by the time he reached  a hospital "it was too late."

Miller said his brain injuries were too far advanced and were "irreversible." He also had serious injuries to his spleen and blood in his abdomen.

Other people who got sick that night sought treatment at an urgent care facility.

Meanwhile, the members began to clean up the fraternity and texted each other that there would be "trouble" if they were caught because the fraternity had been penalized in the past for excessive drinking and hazing.

Timothy's father, James Piazza, said all his son wanted to do was make people laugh.

"This didn't have to happen. This is the result of a feeling of entitlement, flagrant disobedience of the law and disregard for moral values that has been exasperated by a feeling of self-preservation. No parent should have to deal with this."

The Dauphin County coroner ruled that the 19-year-old suffered multiple traumatic injuries in the fall.

In February 2009, the national headquarters of Beta Theta Pi officially disbanded the Penn State chapter for allegedly violating fraternity policies, but the university was not involved in this disciplinary process.

Penn State Presdient Eric Barron in a statement said he found the details of the events inside the fraternity house "sickening and difficult to understand. It is numbing how an atmosphere that endangers the well-being and safety of another person could occur within an organization that prided itself on commitment to each other and to its community."

"All indicators suggested Beta Theta Phi was a model fraternity" where anyone found with alcohol would be expelled, Barron said. It is clear, however, this was no “model” fraternity.

Penn State's Interfraternity Council said Friday that their thoughts continue to be with the Piazza family.

"Our focus, as students, is leading the change Penn State needs to prevent a senseless tragedy like this from happening in the future."

Penn State President Eric J. Barron on Friday defended his university's crackdown on Greek life, which he says some have criticized as "excessive."

"The alleged details in the grand jury presentment, which suggest the inhumane treatment of a student forced through hazing to consume dangerous amounts of alcohol and endure hours of suffering, are sickening and difficult to understand," Barron said in a prepared statement "It is numbing how an atmosphere that endangers the well-being and safety of another person could occur within an organization that prided itself on commitment to each other and to its community."
