Grand plans for The Pier Shops in Atlantic City were announced Wednesday and if you like live music you will love what's planned.

At a press conference Wednesday, Philadelphia developer Bart Blatstein, who purchased the struggling shopping complex on the Atlantic City Boardwalk last year, plans to rename the pier "The Playground."

Plans for The Playground include shopping, bowling, and several live music venues. Each floor of the complex will be modeled after cities with great live music scenes -- one floor will mimic Nashville's Music Row, another after Beale Street in Memphis, and a third level will be modeled after Austin, Texas. All told, The Playground could be home to over a dozen music venues with the largest seating 2,000 people.

Blatstein paid just over $2.5 million for the complex that originally cost $200 million to construct. He hopes most of the work will be done by the end of the year and several hundred jobs could be created.

In an interview Wednesday morning with Harry Hurley on WPG Talk Radio 1450, architect Paul Steelman, who is involved in the project, said Blatstein believes in creating a superior product and Atlantic City desperately needs to become a center of entertainment. Steelman went on to say the entertainment product at The Playground will be diverse and the facility will bring something besides a slot machine to Atlantic City. Hurley, who attended the press conference on Wednesday, called it a, "truly magnificent presentation."
