Students and staff were evacuated from Absegami High School in Galloway following a chemical spill Thursday morning.

The Press of Atlantic City reported there was a spill of an unidentified substance on the second floor this morning. The Atlantic County Hazardous Material Team responded to the school along with area fire and police departments.

Around 9AM, there was a chemical smell reported from a chemical storage room where the chemistry labs keep all their equipment, said Steven B. Ciccariello, superintendent of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District. The doors to the closet were locked, but a decision was made, because of the smell, to evacuate the building, he said.

Parents were alerted to the situation and students returned to the building around noon.
