AG Says Manahawkin Doc Knew He Was Giving Out Compromised Vaccines

TRENTON -- New details are emerging about the complaint filed by the state Attorney General's office against a Manahawkin pediatrics practice and a doctor who allegedly doled out improperly refrigerated vaccines to about 900 area children.

According to a report by The Press of Atlantic City, health inspectors visited Dr. Michael Bleiman's office last July 28 and found 280 vaccines stored at incorrect temperatures. That same day, the report said, Bleiman received an additional shipment of 335 vaccines, which his office, Southern Ocean Pediatrics and Family Medicine, later reported were still subject to storage issues.

Between that July visit and Oct. 24 of last year, according to the report, the state alleged that Southern Ocean Pediatrics gave out 38 compromised vaccines, including ones from the stock of 280 that the inspectors had quarantined -- and told Bleiman not to use -- until their effectiveness could be proven.

Attorney General Chris Porrino's complaint additionally calls for Bleiman's license to be suspended or revoked, the report said.

The faulty vaccines themselves pose no health risks to children who received them, but may not be fully effective in protecting against the diseases they were meant to fight.
