A cold front has shuttled cooler, less humid air into New Jersey, with springlike temperatures expected through the start of the upcoming holiday weekend.

Here are your weather headlines for Wednesday, May 20, 2015...

A Taste of Spring

As promised, the heat and humidity returned to the entire Garden State yesterday, as high temperatures soared into the 80s. An overnight cold front, however, has brought about the end of very warm temperatures and horrid humidity for a little while.

Temperatures will climb from the 50s this morning to either side of 70° this morning - much of the state will be stuck in the 60s all afternoon. Normal highs for May 20 are 73° for Newark and Trenton and 72° in Atlantic City, so we’ll end up just a hair below average today. Meanwhile, a brisk northwest wind will keep the day blustery, with gusts to 20 or 25 mph today.

The cooler air will fully manifest itself tonight, as statewide lows dip well into the 40s. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few chilly 38° or 39° readings tomorrow morning in North Jersey.

Temperature Roller Coaster

Thursday will bring another “mixed bag of weather” day. As a storm system passes south of New Jersey, we’ll be clipped with some clouds and maybe some rain. I think the thickest clouds will be limited to the southern half of the state, with breaks of sun and a pretty nice day in North Jersey. Similarly, the chance of rain should stay away from the northern half of the state. The NAM forecast model puts some decent rainfall everywhere south of I-195 Thursday afternoon and evening. Meanwhile, the GFS keeps the rain further south, below the Atlantic City Expressway. At this point, I probably favor the drier (GFS) forecast as it just seems more realistic given the storm track and our recent stretch of over-forecasted rain and dry weather in South Jersey. Regardless, if you live or work south of I-195, it might be a good idea to keep an umbrella handy tomorrow. Because of the clouds, the rain, and a continuing cool air mass, high temperatures tomorrow will be limited to the 65° to 70° range in North Jersey and potentially even cooler in South Jersey.

Then this week’s temperature roller coaster sets up, with a nice warmup for Friday. Temperatures are expected to climb into the pleasant mid 70s on Friday afternoon with abundant sunshine - a very nice way to kick off the Memorial Day Weekend!

However, a weak cold front is expected to pass through the state on Friday night. No rain expected with this one - just a few clouds and slightly cooler temperatures. So even though Saturday will again feature plenty of sunshine, we’ll be lucky to make it to 70°. A nice Spring day overall... but as I mentioned yesterday, maybe not the most perfect beach day.

Sunday is looking even better, as a southwest wind fuels a warmup to the 71° to 76° range. Clouds will likely increase through the afternoon, but it’ll still be a pleasant and (for now) dry day.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day Monday, however, has flipped back to a wet forecast. In fact, we’re really looking at the possibility of widespread showers and thunderstorms for most of the day. That’s unfortunate, since temperatures will finally spike to about 80° to mark this “unofficial start of summer”. Those hosting Memorial Day ceremonies and remembrances on Monday should keep a close eye on this forecast.

Tuesday will be even warmer and more humid, with highs well into the 80s. But again, scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible.
