Officers from the Absecon Police Department responded to a report of an altercation involving a knife in the area of the Dollar Does It Store at New Jersey Avenue and N. New Road around 2:40 Sunday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Absecon Police Department, two officers arrived on location just as the accused, who was pointed out by the victim and witnesses, was fleeing the area in a motor vehicle. The accused, Carlos Vergara of Absecon, was taken into custody after a high risk motor vehicle stop a short distance from the store. The involved weapon, a folding utility knife with a razor blade was located in the vehicle. The victim, Darryl Thompson of Atlantic City had suffered lacerations to his right hand and was treated at Atlanticare’s Mainland Division Hospital. Vergara was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, plus several motor vehicle violations. Vergara was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility after Municipal Judge William Gasbarro set bail, for all the charges, at $25,000, full.
