Here's an interesting tool which lets you see which bridges across the country, including those here in South Jersey, are structurally deficient — bridges requiring significant maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement.

You may find that you drive on some of these bridges regularly and never even knew they were in bad shape. I certainly didn't!

The results for Atlantic and Cape May Counties spotlights about a dozen bridges in the 'Structurally' Deficient category.

The information on the Transportation for America site is from the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2015, and two of these local bridges; Mays Landing-Somers Point Road and the JFK Memorial Bridge into Longport have since finished projects that would probably remove them from the deficient list.

The "bad bridge" tool will also be helpful on roads you may be traveling on elsewhere in the country while driving or vacationing this summer.

Start by checking out the bridges near where you live. You may find the results a little unsettling.
