NEW YORK — All the flash on the Flyers’ defense pair was supposed to come from his partner, the teenager.

Turns out that at age 38, Mark Streit still has something left in the tank aside from just a mentor role to Ivan Provorov.

It took all of three shifts for the long-time veteran to notch a goal and even the score in what would end up being a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers.

“I didn't play for a week so obviously I was a little rusty here and there,” Streit said. “It's a lot of fun to be back with the guys. It's a great atmosphere and it is definitely sweet to be back and I'm very excited right now.”

Streit, who was an alternate captain for Team Europe, the runners up in the World Cup, snuck down low to put a feed from Brayden Schenn behind Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

In the third period he added more, dishing an offering on net where Sean Couturier tipped it through the legs of Lundqvist for another tying goal just after a Flyers power play had expired.

He had no points for Team Europe in the tournament and two quickly in his first NHL preseason action.

“He really looked like he was in mid-season form,” coach Dave Hakstol said. “I thought the sharpness and the crispness of his game, the decision-making was outstanding. That’s both with and without the puck. Obviously offensively he got a lot done for us, but what I really liked in his game was his play without the puck and his play in getting the puck out of our zone.”

At times last season it looked like Streit might not have a whole lot left in him, like the pubic plate detachment that took him out of the lineup for more than a month and left the door open for Shayne Gostisbehere to emerge might be it.
