PHILADELPHIA - The worst kept secret in the NFL world was unveiled Saturday when the Eagles downgraded Carson Wentz to out vs. the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson revealed to reporters Friday morning that his third-year quarterback would be listed as questionable for the game despite dealing with a "stress injury" in his back that would likely take up to three months to heal.

In NFL parlance "questionable" is supposed to mean that a player has a 50/50 chance of playing and Wentz missed practice all week and other Eagles players spoke in the locker room like Nick Foles was going to be under center against the Rams.

By the time the official injury report was released Friday afternoon Wentz had been downgraded to doubtful and less than 24 hours later he was finally ruled out, a denouement which wasn't exactly an M Night Shyamalan-like twist.

If you're keeping score this is how the week went when it came to Wentz:

On Monday after the overtime loss in Dallas Pederson said Wentz was "feeling as healthy as he's ever been." By Tuesday the QB was undergoing a CT scan which prompted a Wednesday Pederson update of  "Carson has a little bit of back soreness, a little tightness, so we're going to rest him today."

That rest extended to Thursday and Pederson met the media for the final time before Sunday's game in a contentious briefing where it was explained that Wentz was dealing with the "stress injury" and would be listed as questionable. From there came the first downgrade and then the climax on Saturday.

Foles will take over the offense for the first time since Week 2 in the same venue he took control last season when Wentz went down with a torn ACL/LCL against the Rams on Dec. 10, a run that ended with a Super Bowl LII championship.

The Eagles beat Atlanta and lost in Tampa with Foles early this season and the veteran backup compiled a 78.9 passer rating. Overall, Foles has the highest winning percentage (.656) in franchise history as a starting QB, 21-11.

Philadelphia enters Sunday night with a 6-7 mark and a 17 percent chance of reaching the postseason according to FiveThirtyEight.com.
