We’ve all seen it, men, women even children blasting music through their headphones. The truth is, wearing headphones or earbuds can damage our hearing and even have a permanent effect on children.  Hearing loss from earbuds is an example of a condition called noise-induced hearing loss. This kind of hearing loss is becoming more of a problem among kids and teens.  If you notice ringing, buzzing, or roaring in your ears after hearing a loud noise or muffling or distortion of sounds you could be suffering from hearing loss.

The best way to use headphones listen to music at no more than 60% of the max volume also try limiting the amount of time a day using headphones to maximum 60 minutes.

Another trick is to ask someone sitting next to you if they can hear your music.  If they can hear it, lower it to a level where they can.  That way you know its at a safe volume.

Listening to music at a high volume can also make us less aware of what is going on around us.  That can ultimately increase the chance of an accident.  Headphones exist because of our love of music.  So we should be more cautious and protect our hearing so that we can continue to appreciate music.  That’s why it’s important to know the  safest way of using headphones and earbuds.

Ask your primary care physician to incorporate hearing screenings into your regular checkups. Because hearing loss develops gradually, it’s also recommended that you have annual hearing consultations with a hearing healthcare professional. That way, you’ll be more likely to recognize signs of hearing loss and take action as soon as you do.
