Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said at a news conference that a veteran captain was killed when the roof of a three-story building collapsed underneath him as it burned Saturday evening.

A colleague who tried to save him was burned on his hands but is expected to survive.

Ayers says 53-year-old Capt. Michael Goodwin was killed. Twenty-eight-year-old colleague Andrew Godlinski is recovering.

Dozens of firefighters saluted as Goodwin's body was carried from the building in the city's Fabric Row section.

Two city firefighters died a year ago this month when a building collapsed during an inspection.
