State Police have charged five people and released the identity of the one person that was killed in a wild shoot-out on the Atlantic City Expressway Monday afternoon.

According to State Police, the scene unfolded around 3:00 Monday afternoon when they received numerous calls about shots being fired between moving cars on the eastbound side of the Atlantic City Expressway in the area of Exit 12 for Mays Landing / Wrangleboro Road. Shortly thereafter, authorities received a 911 call in reference to a car on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway at mile marker 39; troopers arrived to find a man in the passenger side of that car dead from a gunshot wound. That person has been identified as 22-year-old Rosemund Octavius of Egg Harbor Township. The driver of that car, 24-year-old Anthony Hicks of Mays Landing was not injured and told police Octavius has been shot on the Expressway.

While that part of the investigation was playing-out, authorities were also receiving numerous 911 calls about a four males, all with gunshot wounds, who managed to drive to the Wawa at the Airport Circle at Tilton and Delilah Roads in Egg Harbor Township. All four of those people were taken to Atlantic City Medical Center for treatment. According to a police investigation, the white Ford SUV that they were driving in had been struck by at least 21 gun shots.

Erwin Ashworth, a witness at the Wawa, described the scene to WCAU-TV:

"The driver said he was shot, the passenger was hanging from the window... He said everybody was shot at least a couple times."

Witnesses who observed the shooting tell police a black Dodge Ram pickup truck may have also been involved in the shootout. Troopers are still looking for that vehicle and its occupant(s). State Police say the pick-up truck continued eastbound on the Expressway and may have exited in the Pleasantville area.

State Police detectives and EHT Police traced the path of the SUV back to a location near the Wawa where they found four weapons including three handguns and one AK-style assault rifle.

Troopers say it is not yet clear from which vehicle(s) the shots were fired that killed Octavius or injured the people in the white SUV.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident and drivers will see increased police activity on the Garden State Parkway near the Expressway, around the Airport Circle, and on Delilah Road as more information is sought.

Charges for occupants of the white SUV: unlawful possession of a weapon, four counts each; second degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, four counts each; third degree possession of an assault weapon, one count each; second degree possession of a defaced firearm, one count each; fourth degree employing a juvenile in a crime, first degree (for the three adult occupants of the SUV).
