Atlantic City Electric, which delivers power to nearly 550,000 homes and businesses in south Jersey, has been alerted of a "Green Dot" scam targeting their customers.

Scammers are reportedly telling business owners that their location's electric service account is delinquent and power will be cut off unless their business purchases a "Green Dot Money Pack" for a specific amount at a local store. The owner is then instructed to call the "scam number" over the telephone with the Money Pack's account number and pin. From there, the value is stolen, and the phone transaction is untraceable.

Atlantic City Electric contacts customers over the phone for various reasons, but will never ask for a specific form of payment. The utility said customers should verify a service member's employment before moving forward with the conversation.
