NJ Transit says it has prepared itself if the worst happens this winter weatherwise.

The agency says it is ready with plows, snow blowers and salt to keep their buses and trains rolling.

"Hundreds of rail cars and locomotives have been winterized. And that means that we have checked their onboard heating systems, the ventilation, the thermostats and the electrical components," spokeswoman Lisa Torbic says.

Torbic says in the bus fleet, maintenance personnel have checked heating systems, engine fluids, tires and windshield wipers. She says for light rail vehicles, the switch heaters have also been tested.

"So we are ready for what ever Mother Nature is going to dish out this winter season."

Torbic says they also are packing a pair of jet-powered snow blowers in their anti-Jack Frost arsenal.

"They remove the ice and snow from the tracks and the critical switching areas in our yards."

For snow on the tracks, every locomotive and every engine in the NJ Transit fleet is equipped with a snow plow in the front. And that snow plow will hopefully get rid of any snow that is on the rails.

Torbic says train and bus commuters also need to be prepared for hard weather.

"As always, please allow extra travel time getting to and from your destination," she said. "In hard weather, we always suggest that before anyone starts the trip, they visit our travel alert page."

They encourage customers to sign up for the "My Transit Alert" system at njtransit.com.
