Calvin Wiggins, 24, of Mays Landing, was indicted on an aggravated manslaughter charge for the death of John Charlton, 54, also of Mays Landing, according to the office of Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner.

Charlton survived the beating, and lingered for 10 days following the November 2 incident, during which Wiggins faced an aggravated assault charge. Charlton died November 12 at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus.

Hamilton Township police responded to Route 40 near Cantillion Boulevard, to probe a report of a domestic dispute. Investigators determined that Charlton emerged from his car and demanded that Wiggins stop his assault. Charlton fell to the pavement from the punch, hitting his head, and never regaining consciousness, police said.

Wiggins has been in custody since his November detention hearing.

Hamilton Township Police Detective Craig Clayton led the investigation. The state's case is directed by Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy. Authorities did not disclose whether Wiggins has a defense attorney.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
