He’s a man on a mission.

State Sen. Richard Codey, D-Essex, has launched an online petition to stop those maddening telemarketer and robocalls from bothering us at all hours of the day and night.

Codey’s petition is calling on the Federal Communications Commission to make regulatory changes that would permit telecommunications companies to identify and block these annoying calls from going through to your cellphone or landline.

“I’m sure that that I’m as pissed off about these calls like everybody else out there. I’m fed up with them, and we need to do something.”

Codey said the volume of calls over the past four or five months has increased substantially lately, and it’s driving him and many other people crazy.

“So I decided to go online, post a petition. We’ve already got close to 10,000 signatures already.”

He explained the petition will be delivered to the FCC and New Jersey’s two U.S. senators, Bob Menendez and Cory Booker, imploring them to order Verizon, AT&T and other carriers to use the technology at their disposal and block known robo and telemarketer calls before they reach our phones.

“The message is end this and end it now because we’re all mad as hell and we want it ended right now. You have the ability to stop it, and stop it. We’re mad, we’re angry, we don’t want 'em. I mean, it’s outrageous!”

Codey said the situation has become intolerable.

Codey pointed out several years ago, when telemarketer calls first became a problem, he sponsored legislation to create a Do Not Call registry, which worked well for a while.

“Until all of a sudden, like four or five months ago, this whole thing started, and every day, they send to India all these numbers, random numbers."

Codey stressed the telecommunications companies have a very good idea when robo calls are being made because they will notice a large volume of calls at one time, and they do have the technical ability to block those calls immediately.

“The FCC is looking at it, but we want them to move quicker and get this done as soon as possible."

Codey said the robo-schemers have figured out a way to make the calls look local, so you’re more apt to answer the phone.

“I’m seeing 973 come up, I’m seeing 201 come up and I’m like, I think it’s someone who knows me, and I’d say a third of the time it’s the robo. It’s so frustrating, I don’t even answer my home phone anymore. I might as well turn it off forever.”
