The Egg Harbor Township Board of Education has chosen someone with a long history with the school district as its new interim superintendent.

During Tuesday's school board meeting, former superintendent Fred Nickles was approved as interim superintendent for the 2016-17 school year.

Nickles replaces Scott McCartney, who resigned as superintendent in May to accept the superintendent position in the Moorestown School District.

Nickles was Egg Harbor Township's school superintendent for 12 years, according to the report by Shore News Today, leaving in 2000 to become the superintendent of the Atlantic City School district, where he served for eleven years.

Fred Nickles is also the former chairman of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and served as a state assemblyman and county freeholder.

According to Shore News Today, "Nickles, who was not present at the meeting, was approved to serve as interim superintendent for the 2016-2017 fiscal year beginning July 1 through June 30, 2017 at a rate of $550 per day. His contract was approved by the county earlier this month."
