Motorists are seeing slightly lower prices at the pumps in New Jersey.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in New Jersey on Friday was $3.40, down 2 cents from last week. That's also lower than the price from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.46.

The lower prices end a two-week stretch where pump prices had remained unchanged in New Jersey.

Meanwhile, the national average price rose by 2 cents to $3.63. That's also higher than the national average from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.56.

“While gas prices may tick higher in the next few days, AAA continues to expect lower prices as June continues,” said Tracy Noble, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Prices should drop below a national average of $3.50 per gallon by the end of the month if refineries can transition smoothly from ongoing maintenance to full production."

She also cautions that the hurricane season could impact oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.
