VINELAND — A Cumberland County man admitted Monday to fatally stabbing his brother, dismembering his body and dumping the remains in multiple locations within a wooded area, authorities said.

David Rauner, 55, pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter and desecration of human remains in the death of his brother, Steven Rauner off Millville.

According to First Assistant Prosecutor Harold Shapiro, 46-year-old Steven Rauner was reported missing in December 2012, about a year after he was last seen by family and friends. During a plea hearing, David Rauner admitted that he fatally stabbed his brother in the chest during a physical altercation, then dismembered the body and moved the remains "to another location" in order to conceal them.

In late August of 2015 police from the Millville and Vineland police departments and the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office pursued information leading them to the discovery of Steven's dismembered remains in a wooded area near Shirley Court in Vineland.

The prosecutor said that a portion of the remains "were sufficiently preserved" enough for a medical examiner to determined that his death was caused by "having his heart pierced with a knife." On Aug. 26, 2015, David Rauner was subsequently charged with his brother's death.

Authorities say the charge of manslaughter carries a seven-year sentence in a New Jersey State prison, 85 percent of which must be served before Rauner will become eligible for parole. He also faces another consecutive five-year sentence on the desecration charges.
