A South Brunswick police officer was hospitalized Monday after his patrol car was rear-ended by another vehicle as he sat inside writing a traffic summons, police said.

The crash took place at about 1:45 p.m. on the southbound side of Route 130 near Route 522, NJ Advance Media reported. Police posted about the accident on Twitter, stating that the officer was on a traffic stop when his vehicle was hit from behind by a white car. NJ Advance Media reports that the vehicle also struck the tractor-trailer that the officer had pulled over for speeding.

Following the crash, both the driver and the police officer were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in South Brunswick for injuries. Both were treated and are expected to be released, police said on Twitter.

Authorities say the crash is still under investigation.
