The clock is starting for opponents of the mayor of Vineland to gather enough signatures on petitions to force a recall election.

The effort begins Thursday. The group has until May 19 to gather signatures of 9,447 voters, or one-fourth of the southern New Jersey city's registered voters. The signature-gathering begins Thursday after the city clerk certified the petition on Tuesday.

The Committee to Recall Mayor Ruben Bermudez says the mayor has not fulfilled his duties.

As part of the process, the mayor has a statement on the petition. The Press of Atlantic City reports the statement begins, "Stop. Don't sign this petition and waste $85,000 in tax dollars!"

That's how much a recall election is expected to cost.

Bermudez was elected last year.
