A man being searched for by police tried to create a diversion with a phony call to 9-1-1, but police caught on and were able to arrest the man.

Police in Hamilton Township were investigating an assault case at Cologne Gardens at about 3:00am yesterday. They were attempting to locate Carl Poindexter in relation to the complaint. Poindexter was already wanted for a narcotics warrant from Atlantic County.

Police say as their search was happening, a 9-1-1 call came in about an intoxicated man with a knife at a local Wawa. Police responded, but left some officers in the Cologne Gardens area.

Soon after, they spotted and arrested Poindexter as her tried to board a bus. It was determined that the phony 9-1-1 call had come from Poindexter's phone.

He's since been charged with "Simple Assault; Possession of 10 bags of Heroin; Possession of Marijuana; Making a false 911 call; Obstruction and Hindering Apprehension." He's being held in the Atlantic County Jail.
