Politician Who Called Christie ‘Fat Ass’ for Liking Cowboys Elected Mayor of Philadelphia
The Philadelphia city councilman who lambasted Gov. Christie for being a Cowboys fan has been elected mayor.
Jim Kenney, who routed Republican candidate Melissa Murray Bailey in Tuesday's election to maintain the Democratic Party's 60-year stronghold on Philadelphia's highest office, took to Twitter last December and called Christie a "fat ass" and a "creep" after cameras caught him in the owners box with Jerry Jones as the Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles last December in a key matchup with playoff implications.
"Hey fat assed Christie, kiss Jerry Jones' ass in his box in Dallas. Not across the river from Philly! You are just a creep," read another tweet, which has been deleted from Kenney's account. Kenney later told the PhillyClout blog on Philly.com "PA and Philly taxpayers paid for that box he was sitting in to cheer on the Cowboys," and that as Pennsylvania residents bring in money to the Jersey Shore each year, Christie should "just consider his loyalties."
The game was a reveal for Christie, who until then was quiet about being a Cowboys fan. TV cameras caught him in the owners box with Jerry Jones hugging and high fiving during the game wearing a bright orange sweater.
Christie appeared on "Ask The Governor" a few days later defended himself. "I'm a big Dallas Cowboys fan. I have been since I was 9 years old. I'm not going to sit there and pretend like I'm not enjoying myself," said the governor, who accused Kenney of using the incident to raise his own profile.
"I'm sitting with the owner of the Cowboys and the Cowboys score a touchdown, what am I supposed to do?" Christie said. "When Dez Bryant scored his third touchdown last night ... burning the Eagle defensive back, you can bet your life I'm high-fiving Jerry Jones."
Christie said he's a kind-hearted, compassionate guy and refuses to "get into some tiff with Eagles fans."
The governor became a good luck charm, wearing the sweater to subsequent games before the Cowboys lost to Green Bay in the playoffs in January.
