Rutgers Educator Taken to Psychiatric Hospital After Anti-Trump Tweets
NEW BRUNSWICK — A Rutgers University lecturer says New York police forced him to undergo a psychiatric examination after campus police alerted the NYPD about his comments and tweets criticizing President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters.
Kevin Allred, a $14,500-a-year part-time lecturer in the undergraduate Women's & Gender Studies Department who developed a "Politicizing Beyoncé" course, was released Tuesday from Bellevue Hospital and was not charged with any crime.
The NYPD said Allred, who is white, "made threats to kill white children" and said Rutgers University Police requested he be taken from his Brooklyn home for evaluation.
Rutgers spokesman E.J. Miranda said Thursday that "the Rutgers University Police Department responded to a complaint from a student and took all appropriate action. We have no further comment."
Allred tweeted that his detention by the NYPD is "proof positive that Trump's crackdown on free speech has absolutely begun," adding that the professionals who evaluated him thought it was "ridiculous" for him to be hospitalized.
On the Thursday following the election, Allred asked on Twitter: "[W]ill the 2nd amendment be as cool when i buy a gun and start shooting atrandom people or no ...?" (sic)
That tweet has since been deleted.
A day after the election, Allred said on Twitter that if he saw a Trump bumper sticker, "my brakes will go out and I'll run you off the road."
After deleting the 2nd Amendment tweet, Allred clarified that "my statements the police labeled threats were abt burning the american flag& me posing a rhetorical question on 2nd amendment." (sic)
"THAT IS WHAT THEY DEEMED A THREAT ENOUGH TO SEND POLICE FROM 2 DIFF STATES AFTER ME & FORCE ME INTO A PSYCH HOSPITAL. wow." (sic)
Allred, a Brooklyn resident, said Rutgers police told him they called the NYPD after trying to contact him all day.
"They've had my home address. & also know i'd be there tomorrow to teach. pure intimidation," Allred tweeted.
Allred has tweeted dozens of times daily since the election about his unhappiness about the result. A sampling of his tweets:
