This round of fluffy, occasionally heavy snow will end completely by late morning, and then another shot of snow and more arctic temperatures are in the forecast for the rest of the week.

Here are your weather headlines for Tuesday, February 17, 2015...

Snowy Morning Commute

Delayed openings and closings are rolling in fast and furious this morning, thanks to a healthy dose of snow overnight. The snow is fluffy and powdery, which will make it very easy to shovel and clear off cars later today. But many primary and secondary roads are just plain disgusting, so many New Jerseyans will have a most difficult time getting to work or school today, if at all.

A Winter Storm Warning continues for Cape May, Atlantic, Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, and Ocean counties through 10 a.m. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Monmouth, Mercer, Middlesex, Hunterdon, and Somerset counties until 10 a.m.

The heaviest snow will end from west to east by about 7 or 8 a.m. Look for snow showers to persist through 10 or 11 a.m., especially along the Jersey Shore. This afternoon, skies will clear quickly to partly sunny (and maybe even mostly sunny). Any breaks of sunshine will help toward melting some of the snow that fell last night. High temperatures will only reach the mid 20s, however, keeping things feeling cold and wintry all day.

Next Shot of Snow

Right on the heels of today's significant snowstorm will come another shot at snow showers. From about sunset on Wednesday through sunrise on Thursday, we’ll see the potential for light snow statewide. Read carefully: snow showers = light = not a big deal.
Accumulations and travel impacts should remain light.

Another potentially messier storm system is on deck for the weekend. At the moment, it looks like a wintry mix lasting from late Saturday through the entire day on Sunday. However, it’s too early to nail down these temperature-dependent winter weather impacts any further at this point. If you have weekend plans, stay tuned to this evolving forecast through the rest of the week.

Arctic Air Returns

Really?! Again?! Are you sick of this winter yet??

As tomorrow night’s clipper exits, an arctic cold front will yet again open the door to a very cold air mass. The front won’t be as powerful as the one that passed through last weekend - so winds won’t be as ferocious, only gusting to about 30 mph. (Compare that to 50-60 mph gusts last weekend.) But the pool of cold, dry air that is prone to move on top of New Jersey for Thursday and Friday is no joke. We’ll return to “dangerous” and “extreme” cold with high temperatures in the teens, low temperatures approaching zero (especially Friday morning), and those painful wind chills way below zero.

The long-term outlook? Sunday will be our best chance at above-freezing temperatures in the coming days. In fact, it may our only chance at above-freezing temperatures through the end of February...
