Most of New Jersey is waking up to about 6 to 9 inches of fresh snow on the ground, as cold but quiet weather moves in for the weekend.

Here are your weather headlines for Friday, March 6, 2015...

Snowstorm Recap

Unless you were safe and warm at home, yesterday was just a terrible, wintry, snowy day. My forecast for a widespread 6 to 9 inches turned out fairly well, although those higher totals admittedly reached further into North Jersey than anticipated (particularly for Morris and Warren counties, where our final forecast called for up to 4 inches). The snow finished falling late last night, but there is a pile of fresh snow to continue cleaning up today.

How much did we get? Here’s a statewide summary:

Arctic Air Returns

As you may have noticed if you stepped outside or looked at a thermometer this morning, the arctic air has returned. Morning low temperatures for most of the state are in the single digits. And despite sunshine, we’re not going to warm up much this afternoon, with forecast highs only ranging from 21° to 26°. Consider the fact that the current normal low for early March is 30° and normal highs are approaching 50°. We’ll have one more very cold night to kick off the weekend tonight, with widespread teens for temperatures and a few single digits possible in North Jersey and in the Pine Barrens.

Milder, Quieter Weather Ahead

I don’t want to get your hopes up and call next week's temperatures “warm”. But it does appear that thermometers will climb to levels a bit closer to normal highs for at least part of next week. My 5-Day Forecast bumps us up to the 30s for Saturday, lower 40s for Sunday and Monday, and maybe some mid to upper 40s for Tuesday. Not bad... especially if winds are light, and we see some sunshine.

Perhaps more importantly, our weather looks much quieter for the next week at least! (Hooray!) Considering we’ve had some sort of inclement weather for every single weekend since January 10-11, that is rather significant. Now, I can’t rule out a light sprinkle or flurry for Sunday, as a weak disturbance moves across New Jersey. But models are showing the atmosphere is just too dry for anything more than that.

The next storm to keep a close eye will come on Tuesday - a coastal storm. This system looks to bring at least something (likely rain) to southern and/or coastal New Jersey, but the vast majority of this storm is pegged to slide out to sea.

One of the most common questions I’m asked nowadays is whether winter is over yet! (In fact, our own Bob Williams asked me that very question just minutes ago.) I wish I could say yes! But I just can’t answer with any confidence, as New Jersey can see snowfall well into April. Long-range models continue to show a warmup coming our way in the 10-14 day range, so keep fingers crossed that warm air materializes and we see temperatures in the 50s and 60s soon!
