Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida late Wednesday and early this morning after several Spirit Airlines flights were delayed.

Several flights were delayed last night and more were delayed this morning. The delayed flights were headed for Atlantic City International Airport, the New York City-area, Denver, Orlando, and Tampa.

A Spirit Airlines spokesperson said the flights were delayed following engine failure on an aircraft last week; the airline is completing "a proactive and voluntary check'' on aircraft as a precautionary measure.

"We apologize for these delays. We are working diligently to get our customers where they need to go as quickly as possible," Pinson said in a statement via WTVJ-TV in Miami.

Several passengers spent the night sleeping at the airport and complained of a lack of communication from Spirit.
