An off-duty New Jersey State Police officer answered the call for a woman going into labor along the Garden State Parkway — and delivered a healthy baby girl.

Sgt. Sean Boag was headed home on Friday afternoon when he heard a call come in from an expectant Lakewood couple on the northbound Parkway in Middletown headed for New Brunswick, State Police said. He was close by and responded in minutes.

Within moments Boag arrived and delivered a healthy baby girl, police said. The family was taken to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, where mother and daughter are doing well, police said.

The mother and father have not been identified by police.

Boag told the Asbury Park Press this was his first on-the-job delivery although officers are trained for a number of emergency medical situations including birthing a baby.. Boag said he is a father of three.

It's the second time in a month that State Police officers assisted with a delivery on the highway. Troopers Robert Ravotto, Detective I Jason Kazan, Trooper II Robert Ciecwicz, and Detective Robert Kilmurray all assisted with the delivery of a premature baby along the New Jersey Turnpike in November.
