Texas DA Slain In His Home, Had Armed Himself After Assistant Was Killed [VIDEO]

Ever since one of his assistants was shot and killed two months ago, north Texas district attorney Mike McLelland took no chances.

He said he carried a gun everywhere he went, and took extra care when answering the door at his home. In an interview less than two weeks ago, the 23-year Army veteran said he was "ahead of everybody else" -- because he was a "soldier."

Despite his precautions, McLelland and his wife have been found shot to death in their home. Authorities aren't discussing a possible connection with the shooting of his assistant in January.

The killings of McLelland and his wife came less than two weeks after Colorado's prison chief was gunned down at his front door -- a killing authorities believe was carried out by a white-supremacist ex-convict. And McLelland himself had raised the possibility that his assistant, Mark Hasse, had been killed by white supremacists.

Police recently said that the FBI was checking to see if the January killing of the assistant prosecutor in Texas could be related to this month's killing of prison director Tom Clements in Colorado.

The former Colorado inmate who authorities believe killed Clements died 10 days ago in a shootout with Texas deputies, about 100 miles from where the prosecutor and his wife were killed.
