TOMS RIVER — A 56-year-old township resident was shot and killed Tuesday by police.

Prosecutors said two police officers were sent to check on the wellness of the resident at the Silver Ridge Apartments. Police believed the man was in need of "professional mental health intervention services."

Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Spokesman Al Della Fave said the incident happened at around 12:30 p.m. and that there had been a "physical altercation" before the man was shot.

Della Fave said an autopsy will be conducted by the Ocean County Medical Examiners Office and that the investigation is ongoing at the scene.

"When all the facts and circumstances surrounding the event are definitively confirmed a full account will be issued to the press by our office," Della Fave told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "We ask for your patience and willingness to refrain from soliciting unofficial sources in an effort to rush to judgement."
