A Trenton police officer is recovering after he was accidentally shot in the foot by his partner when a 30-year-old burglary suspect assaulted them Monday, police told NJ Advance Media.

According to the story, the officers were responding to a report of a burglary on Clinton Avenue in Trenton at about 2:41 a.m. when the incident occurred.

Officers Michael Tradigo and Luis Cruz were attempting to enter the apartment after a witness reported seeing a man believed to be the burglar enter the residence with a weapon, NJ Advance Media reported. Authorities told the publication that the suspect then ran out of the apartment at which time Tradigo accidentally discharged his weapon, hitting Cruz in the foot. No other injuries were reported. The officer was treated at a local hospital and later released, the story states.

The suspect was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and burglary and is being held on $50,000 bail, NJ Advance Media reported.
