Wildwood To Host Diabetes Fundraiser [AUDIO]

Wildwood is gearing up to host the annual Walk To Cure Diabetes next weekend on the Boardwalk.

The city is partnering with several area businesses and the South Jersey Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to coordinate the event on Saturday, May 18th.

"We're raising funds to help diabetes research," said Wildwood Spokesperson, Caroline Ranoia.

The money raised will go to the JDRF as they continue to work to find a cure for diabetes, which affects nearly 3 million Americans.

Ranoia says it's important "to raise money and raise awareness of how this disease is just so debilitating, and how it affects so many people."

Registration for the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at Morey's Adventure Pier with the walk beginning at 10 a.m.

The event will feature a three mile route around the scenic Wildwood Boardwalk and a DJ playing tunes to motivate the walkers.

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun. We're really looking forward to hosting this event and getting lots of participation," Ranoia said.

The JDRF has raised more than $1.5 billion for diabetes research worldwide, and nearly 600,000 walkers participated in similar fundraisers last year.

This will be Wildwood's first time hosting the event.

"It's really important for us to conduct events like this," Ranoia explained.

National Alliance on Mental Illness of New Jersey

Do you know someone suffering from mental illness? The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of New Jersey will host its annual NAMI NJ Rally for Recovery on May 11 at Seaside Park. A walk was scheduled as well, but those plans had to be revised due to Superstorm Sandy.

Last year's walk and rally raised almost $150,000. NAMI New Jersey and its affiliates work together to raise awareness about mental illness and provide education, advocacy and support group programs for people in New Jersey living with mental illness and their loved ones. Robby Murphy

Sixteen-year-old Freehold Township High School student Robby Murphy is spearheading the 5th Annual Run for the Animals 3K on May 11 at Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Proceeds raised at the event will benefit the Monmouth County SPCA. Murphy started the event at the age of 12 after being inspired by ASPCA commercials.
