Just like that, Absecon, New Jersey City Council will go from Democrat to Republican majority.

Democrats have spent many years in the majority.

Atlantic County Republican Party Chairman Don Purdy, along with United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew were instrumental in Absecon Councilman Steve Light’s decision to become a registered Republican.

Purdy announced the decision today, while guest-hosting Scott Cronick’s radio program on WOND 1400 AM.

We learned about the decision prior to Purdy’s announcement.

Light’s switch is in advance of this Thursday, January 5, 2023 Absecon City Council reorganization meeting.

Light will change the majority from Democrat to Republican for the first time in nearly a decade. Republicans will now hold a 4-3 majority.

About his political party switch, Light said:

“I’ve always been a Conservative who believes in faith, family, and truly doing right by your community and its residents which is why during my time on Council I often found myself working with and supporting leaders like Congressman Van Drew, Senator Vince Polistina, County Executive Dennis Levinson who share my values and views on how government should work for people regardless of the politics,” said Light.

“After speaking with my colleagues on Council about our legislative priorities for the year ahead and visions for the direction we would like to see Absecon go in the future it became clear that my rightful place was in the Republican Party.”

“I want to thank Atlantic County Republican Chairman Don Purdy who has been a long time friend for welcoming me with open arms and look forward to working with our new Republican majority on council to improve services, invest in our infrastructure, and increase funding for public safety while holding the line on taxes - our residents and visitors deserve nothing less,” said Light.

Van Drew said the following about light’s switch:

“Councilman Light and I have had a number of conversations over the last few years about how the Democrat party that once was, is no more and his increasing desire to join us in an Atlantic County Republican party that better reflects his Conservative values,” said United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew. “As I told the councilman this morning, becoming a Republican was one of the best decisions I ever made and I look forward to working with him and Absecon’s new Conservative majority to deliver an even safer and stronger community for its residents,” said Van Drew.
