Another One Gone: National Chain Closing its Flagship Store in Philadelphia This Month

A national pharmacy chain has announced that it will be closing its huge flagship store for Philadelphia by the end of this month.

Walgreens at Broad and Chestnut, adjacent to City Hall, in Center City, will conclude its decade-long run on February 28th.

As reported by phillyvoice.com, this wasn't a typical pharmacy. This Walgreens, at some 26,000-square-feet, featured three floors and included a cafe with expanding food offerings.

Fraser Engerman, a Walgreens spokesperson, told The Philadelphia Inquirer,

"We are focused on creating the right network of stores in the right locations to best meet the needs of the communities we serve. We have made the difficult decision to close this location. There are a number of factors that we take into consideration including dynamics of the local market and changing buying habits of our customers."

One of those factors is a noticeable drop in foot traffic in Center City. Thanks to the pandemic, scores of people that used to work in the city now do so from home.

While this particular Walgreens store is closing, many others in the city will remain open, including locations near Suburban Station and on the 1100 block of Locust Street, near Jefferson Hospital.
