Atlantic City Brings Back Former Controversial Supt. Mark Harris

For those of you who were not a fan of the Mark Harris era, when he was Superintendent of the Atlantic City Public Schools, from 1992 to 1996, get ready, because he’s Baaaaaaaack.

Well, kinda, sorta.

The Atlantic City Board of Education has just hired Harris as a “Substitute Administrator” at their regular meeting held on April 12, 2022.

Here’s the proof:

What this means is that Harris will serve as a substitute superintendent, when La’Quetta Small is off.

An Atlantic City Board of Education Member confirmed that there is currently no other staff member employed who is qualified to be “Substitute Superintendent” in the absence of Small.

Harris’ rate of pay will be $650 per-day, which is the established going rate for this position.

If you were on the scene some 30 years ago, you know that the Mark Harris era was both unpopular and controversial.

It remains to be seen how his newest stint as a substitute superintendent will be received.

If the past is prologue, and it usually is, it won’t be boring.

We reached out to Atlantic City Board of Education Member John Devlin to comment on the hiring of Harris. He was unwilling to do so at this time because he is investigating the circumstances surrounding this hiring.
