Atlantic County Commissioner Ernest Coursey, D-1 has issued a blatantly racial assessment, calling Egg Harbor Township a “white town” in a letter to The Atlantic County Board of Elections, written on April 5, 2022.

We have obtained a copy of Coursey’s letter.

Because Coursey’s racial comment is quite controversial and incendiary in nature, we are publishing his entire letter, so that you have the full context.

Coursey writes:

April 5, 2022

To Members of the Atlantic County Board of Elections:

As one of two African-American members of the Board of Atlantic County Commissioners, I’m urging you to vote in favor of the creation of an early voting location at the senior citizen mid-rise building in the city of Pleasantville.

Given that a disproportionate number of residents rely on public transportation to get around, an early voting location in Pleasantville would serve the most good.

Furthermore, I’m particularly troubled that the board seems poised to create an early voting site in a white town (Egg Harbor Township) but will be making excuses as to why one cannot be created in a minority town like Pleasantville.

The Board of Elections should approve both sites to help all Atlantic County residents.

Thank you for your consideration.

Very truly yours,

Ernest D. Coursey, Sr.

Coursey’s letter is written on his official Atlantic County Commissioner letterhead while serving in his position as a County Commissioner.

We leave it to you, the reader, to decide if you believe that Coursey is guilty of gaslighting, by making an Ad hominem, racially charged comment in his official public capacity.

NOTE: In the 2021 election cycle, there was not an early voting location in Egg Harbor Township or Pleasantville. Immediately below is a list of all New Jersey early voting locations, broken down by County.

The Atlantic County Board of Elections has decided (last night) to add an early voting location in Egg Harbor Township.

Atlantic County Clerk Joe Giralo will break a 2-2 Republican-Democrat (Atlantic County Board of Elections) tie between Buena (where there was an early voting location in 2021) and Pleasantville for an early voting location.

Early voting locations in each NJ county

Each county in the state will have between three and 10 early voting locations, open daily for the 2021 general election from Oct. 23 through Oct. 31. The sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. except for Sundays, when they will close at 6 p.m.
