It's Halloween, which means endless stories and news about how your child's candy may be unsafe. Here are some tips to make sure everything is copacetic.

You've probably already heard the current warnings about marijuana candies being handed out to trick-or-treaters. And of course, there's the age old warnings of candy being poked with holes and/or having needles. Whether you believe the warnings or not, it's always good to be cautious especially when it comes to our little ones.

Here's a list of tips to check if Halloween candy is safe to eat, thanks to Channel Islands!

DO NOT EAT THE CANDY IF:

  • There's any unusual discoloration/looks weird
  • The candy looks spoiled and/or unwrapped
  • Check for tiny holes within the wrapper
  • Homemade/baked goods -- if you didn't see them make it, don't eat it
  • Smells weird (this is a nod to marijuana candy)
  • Your gut instinct says throw it away
  • It's candy corn ( this is my own advice)

Channel Islands also offers tips on what sort of candies children should eat/avoid depending on allergies.

SHOULD anything happen, call your nearest poison control center or keep my app of the week, American Red Cross First Aid, in your phone just in case!

Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone!
