16-Year-Old Dirt Bike Rider Killed in Upper Township Crash

A 16-year-old boy riding a dirt bike in Upper Township on Saturday afternoon collided with an SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to New Jersey State Police.

Police say the crash happened at about 2:30 pm Saturday on County Road 628 near milepost 6.55 in Upper Township.

The teen was riding north on County Rd 628 when he collided with the passenger side of a Nissan Rogue that was also driving north. The car was turning left into a driveway when the dirt bike hit the vehicle's passenger side.

No one in the car was injured and no charges were filed. Police say the accident remains under investigation.

The rider was identified only as a teen from Jackson Township, NJ.

He sustained fatal injuries according to police.

NJ Rules for Dirt Bike Riders

You do not need a permit or license to operate an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in New Jersey.

However, the vehicle must be registered and you must observe the following regulations: Operator must be at least 14 years old.

Dirt bikes are not street-legal.

For a bike to be street legal in New Jersey, it must have a brake light, headlight, and at least one mirror.

An enduro or dual-sport motorcycle that has lights and at least one mirror and is registered in New Jersey could be ridden on the road. It would also need to be properly insured and the rider licensed.
