The rumors spread quickly Thursday in Wildwood about an ICE deportation raid taking place in the city.

According to a woman interviewed by Ted Greenberg from NBC 10 news, it created many issues in Wildwood, with some kids staying home from school, some restaurants closing for lack of staff and many people deciding not to go to work.

Can you blame them? Just this week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement have made raids looking for illegal immigrants in Newark and Perth Amboy.

So, why couldn't it happen in Wildwood?

By Thursday afternoon, Wildwood Police had heard enough about the rumors to post a clarification on Facebook.

Wildwood Police have been made aware of numerous social media reports of an alleged ICE operation taking place in Wildwood. This is not factual information.

 

What Was Really Happening in Wildwood?

The New Jersey Sheriff’s Association is holding their executive board induction ceremony today in Wildwood. That is why there is a visible law enforcement presence.
We would like to congratulate Cape May County Sheriff Robert Nolan on being sworn in as President of the association.

There were representatives of ICE at the Sheriff's Association meeting in Wildwood, speaking about their work and what cooperation they might want from New Jersey county sheriffs.

However, the ICE agents did not take any migrants, or, anyone else Thursday in Wildwood.

Good news -- all the restaurants will be open for business today.
