When winter hits, my taste buds crave two specific items.

A good bowl of chili, and a nice hot crock of onion soup.

This is a soup that can be prepared in several different ways.

The typical recipe I prefer includes onions, beef broth, some garlic (I use garlic in everything), some pepper (I don't use salt), and either some cooking sherry, wine, or Worcestershire.

No crock of French onion soup is complete without a thick layer of cheese.

My cheese of choice is either provolone or meunster.

You have to layer the cheese on thick and then bake the crock.

It's not ready to eat until the cheese is slightly burnt.

In South Jersey, we're fortunate to have a nice choice of restaurants to choose from when you have a hankering for French Onion Soup.

We've done some research, and have come up with a list of some of the most popular.

If we missed your favorite place, let me know, and we'll do a follow-up.

Of course, I'll have to come out personally to sample the product.
