During his Wednesday news briefing, Murphy said big crowds were expected but he was upset about long wait times at MVC offices across the Garden State.
The Motor Vehicle Commission reopened more offices on Tuesday for the first time since March but has been turning away people who waited in line for hours with hundreds of others at each location.
Two-month extensions have been granted by the MVC for those whose drivers licenses, auto registration, and inspections are due for renewal by May 31st.
MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton said while overall wait times have increased to get a Real ID at the MVC, “the response to the walk-in policy has been great...".
The gender declaration form has just a male or female option but later this year the MVC will allow nonbinary people to display their gender as "X" on their licenses and identification cards.
About 2,500 Real IDs have been issued since September. But many people who signed up to get a Real ID driver’s license are finding it impossible to get an appointment.
