South Brunswick Deputy Police Chief James Ryan said the Jamesburg woman saw the lights at the crossing on Cranbury-South River Road (Route 535) just after 3 p.m. and came to a stop on the Conrail tracks.
Sgt. Tim Hoover told ABC 7 that even in autopilot, the driver is responsible for the operation of their vehicle. The driver was charged with careless driving.
Every late winter the salamanders cross from one side of Beekman Road in East Brunswick, which turns into White Pine Road in South Brunswick to get to their breeding pond. After laying their eggs they will cross the road to return home.
