Willie Nelson Invites Trump to Visit Border Detention Center With Him

Willie Nelson has already made it clear where he stands on recent immigration policy changes and enforcement, but on Monday (June 18), he upped the ante a little more. The country icon sent out a tweet in which he invited President Donald Trump to go visit a border detention center with him.

"Hey Donald this is @WillieNelson," Nelson tweeted out through the Happy Blue Year Twitter account, which belongs to Nelson's wife, Annie. "Let’s go down to a border detention center together to better understand what’s happening down there?!"

Nelson's publicist confirmed that the Tweet originated from Nelson, according to the Austin-American Statesman. The country legend also tagged political representatives and members of the media, including Paul Ryan, Paul Begala, Rachel Maddow and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Nelson issued a statement last week that called the policy enforcement at the Mexico / U.S. border "outrageous." "Christians everywhere should be up in arms. What happened to 'Bring us your tired and weak and we will make them strong?' This is still the promise land," Nelson told Rolling Stone Country at the time.

Since the Trump administration enacted the zero-tolerance policy more than six weeks ago, nearly 2,000 Mexican children have been taken from their parents when the families cross the border illegally, according to BuzzFeed. The parents are taken into criminal custody, and the children are sent to detention centers operated by the Department of Health and Human Services, or put into foster care.

President Trump has yet to respond to Nelson's offer.
