Atlantic City, NJ, teen gets lighter prison sentence for gun

A teenager from Atlantic City could have been sent to prison for five years after a police officer caught him with a gun.

Instead, a judge sentenced him to three years and he could be out in only one.

Angelo Williams of Atlantic City, NJ, Sentenced

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office says on Thursday, 19-year-old Angelo Williams was sentenced on a charge of second-degree possession of a handgun without a permit.

On September 29th of last year, an Atlantic City police officer learned that a man in the area of 30 North Arkansas Avenue had a gun.

Officers found the man, later identified as Williams, and when he was frisked, the cop "immediately felt the handle of a handgun in the waist area of Williams."

Williams then reportedly "began to bend at the waist to break the officer’s control but was quickly taken into custody with the assistance of other officers."

The weapon was a 9mm handgun, which was unlabeled and not imprinted with a serial number. Additionally, the firearm was equipped with a fifteen-round large-capacity ammunition magazine, which contained nine bullets, with one in the chamber.

Court Imposes Lesser Sentence

Last month, Williams entered into a plea agreement and accepted a five-year prison term with one year of parole ineligibility. However, at the time of sentencing, the court imposed a lesser three-year term and he could be released in one.

Assistant Prosecutor David Little represented the State in this matter. The Atlantic City Police Department Special Investigations Unit conducted the investigation.
