Vineland, NJ, man facing additional charge in pedestrian-van crash; alcohol a factor, cops say

Nearly two months after a pedestrian was critically injured in an accident in Vineland, the driver of a transit van is now facing another charge.

After the accident on February 29th, 40-year-old Richard Earl III was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, possession of open alcoholic containers in a motor vehicle, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and operating a vehicle while unlicensed.

This past Friday, a third-degree assault by auto charge was added.

According to the Vineland Police Department, on that evening, their officers responded to the area of North Main Road and East Landis Avenue for the report of a pedestrian-vehicle crash.

An investigation revealed that Earl was driving a 2013 Ford Transit Van northbound on North Main Road when a pedestrian, 51-year-old Gurmeet Singh of Vineland, crossed North Main Road in Earl's lane of travel and was struck.

Singh sustained life-threatening injuries and was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden and was originally listed in critical condition.

Officers at the scene say Earl was allegedly impaired under the influence of alcohol.

Following the new charge, Earl was released on a summons pending a court hearing at Bridgeton Superior Court.
