Weekend DUI Checkpoint to be Set Up on Parkway
The checkpoint will be set up sometime during the evening on the northbound Parkway,
on or near Exit 117 for the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Police say it's an effort to keep that section of the road safe, citing 79 alcohol-related accidents in that area of the highway.
Country star Tim McGraw's Shotgun Rider tour, with Billy Currington and Chase Bryant, stops at the Arts Center on Saturday night.
"Enhanced DWI enforcement on the Garden State Parkway will serve as a deterrent to people who may be inclined to take the wheel after having too much to drink," said Lt. Col. Patrick Callahan, Deputy Superintendent in a statement. "We are confident that taking impaired drivers off the road will reduce the overall number of crashes in the area."
In announcing a similar checkpoint on the Parkway in February, State Police defended announcing it ahead of time.
"People who choose to drive after drinking already know how expensive, life-changing, and deadly such a decision can be. But they do it anyway in total disregard for their safety and the safety of everyone else on the road," they wrote at the time.
Troopers at the checkpoint will be looking for "signs of impairment due to alcohol or drugs," according to the statement. State Police say there were 1,000 alcohol-related arrests on that area of the Parkway between 2012 and 2014. Three of nine fatal accidents in that stretch were alcohol-related.
