Atlantic City Based World Class Professional Boxing Referee Dies
Steve Smoger was a former Atlantic City Judge, Solicitor and world class caliber professional boxing referee.
We have learned about his passing (after a lengthy illness), from Ray McCline, founder and president of the Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame, of which Smoger was an inductee.
Smoger served the City of Atlantic City as Solicitor (2002-2005), appointed by Mayor Lorenzo Langford.
Smoger was born in Norfolk, Virginia on August 15, 1950. He passed away following a lengthy illness.
Smoger also served as an Atlantic City Municipal Judge. He loved the law and being a judge.
Smoger also loved the fight game and served as the referee in more than 200 championship bouts.
New Jersey Smoger was first licensed (1982) as a professional boxing referee by then New Jersey Boxing Commissioner Jersey Joe Walcott.
It has been long reported that Smoger officiated in more states and countries than any referee in the history of professional boxing.
Smoger is a member of the following Boxing Hall of Fame organizations:
- International Boxing Hall of Fame
- Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame
- New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame
- Philadelphia Boxing Hall of Fame
- Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame
Smoger officiated elite championship fights, including:
Bernard Hopkins-Felix Trinidad, Kelly Pavlik-Jermain Taylor, Roy Jones-Bernard Hopkins, Andre Ward-Carl Froch.
Smoger also officiated kick boxing and women’s boxing matches.
Smoger served as a member of the New Jersey Air National Guard and the United States Air Force Reserve.
Smoger held the title of Staff Judge Advocate and achieved the rank of colonel.
Smoger served for 30 years.
