Part Of Historic Atlantic City, NJ, Garden Pier Torn Down: Here’s Why
Former New Jersey Assemblyman Tom Foley called-in this morning (on-air), very upset that Atlantic City, New Jersey’s Garden Pier has been torn down.
We have obtained the rest of the story … in both photos and this narrative.
It is important to note that only part of Garden Pier has been demolished.
History of Garden Pier
Garden Pier opened on July 19, 1913 at South New Jersey Avenue and the Boardwalk.
It was a very upscale and popular Boardwalk attraction.
It was known for its formal gardens, Italian Renaissance architecture, and the B.F. Keith's Theatre, which was located at the end of the once grand pier.
It also was the venue for the first Miss America Pageant in 1921.
Over the many years, Garden Pier has been the home of the B.F. Keith's Theatre, Atlantic City Historical Museum and the Atlantic City Art Center.
Atlantic City Mayor’s Office Has Confirmed
I reached out for a comment. We have been advised that owner Bart Blatstein and Showboat Atlantic City have torn down part of the Garden Pier to make way for a luxury beach club.
A knowledgeable source who is not directly affiliated with Atlantic City Hall told me:
The building sustained additional structural damage this winter due to the weight/wind/weather damage and portions of the boardwalk support underneath the structure also may be compromised.
Here Is Evidence That Care Was Taken To Save The Terra-cotta Roof Shingles
Above you can see that the terra-cotta roof shingles are stacked neatly to be preserved and repurposed.
Showboat & Garden Pier Owner Bart Blatstein
I will be adding comments to this article from Blatstein immediately upon receipt.
UPDATE: I have now spoken to a source who is very close to Bart Blatstein. I can confirm that the front part will be for entertainment purposes and the back area will be a beach club.
Having an elevated beach club is significant because of the continual beach erosion suffered in this area of Atlantic City.
