Atlantic City, NJ, Police: 12-year-old With Loaded Gun Assaulted Officer
A 12-year-old boy from Atlantic City is facing charges after allegedly being found with a loaded gun and assaulting a police officer.
The incident unfolded around 2:00 Thursday afternoon on the 600 block of New York Avenue.
According to the Atlantic City Police Department, an officer observed a boy walking into a convenience store.
Officer Grams observed what appeared to be a handgun in the male’s waistband. Officer Grams entered the store to investigate further, and the male was standing at the counter. Upon seeing Officer Grams, the male immediately left the counter and attempted to flee through an employee area towards the back door.
As Ofc. Grams attempted to place him in custody, "the male resisted these efforts while continually trying to reach for the handgun in his waistband."
During a lengthy struggle, the boy allegedly bit the officer on his hand.
Police say while resisting arrest, the boy's loaded handgun had become dislodged from his waistband and was recovered from inside of his pant leg.
The 12-year-old has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest. He was remanded to the Harborfields Detention Facility.
