A whistleblower has come forward and provided us with an audio recording which depicts an Atlantic City public schools administrator telling teachers that it’s ok to leave students alone in the classroom for 30 seconds … while they leave their classrooms unattended to handle other duties.

The directive appears to directly contradict Atlantic City public schools policy which states otherwise. Here is exactly how the regulation reads:

District Regulation

3280 - LIABILITY FOR PUPIL WELFARE

A class or activity must never be left unattended while pupils are in the room. except that a teacher may stand immediately outside the door of the rooms as pupils are entering.

In the recording, the school administrator is asking staff members if they are OK with her request. To be clear, her request calls for teachers to leave students alone in their classroom, while the teacher is supposed to achieve another administrative goal.

One staff member responded multiple times “No comment.”

This staff member was very uncomfortable with being instructed to leave their classroom unattended and ultimately stated that they would not do so.

First, it’s the absolute wrong thing to do.

Second, the administrator’s directive violates the Atlantic City public schools own regulations.

Here is a copy of the Atlantic City public schools regulation:

The administrator questioned the staff as to how long would students be left alone in the classroom if they followed her directive.

The teacher can be heard on the audio recording stating that they will not leave their students alone in the classroom for even 30 seconds.

Kudos to this courageous teacher for speaking truth to power.

We are not revealing any names in this report, because retaliation that regularly occurs in Atlantic City is pervasive.

This is yet another, in a long line of disturbing issues within the Atlantic City public schools system that the state of New Jersey must promptly investigate.
